Alternote the Note-taking App App Reviews

Almost has everthing I wish evernote had

I like evernote… at least the concept of it. It however leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to formatting and actually doing documentation and note taking within the client. Alternote gets one step closer by allowing much more features for formatting the text, and offers a much clearner interface which helps concetrate on the specific note. Evernote can overwhelm your eyes with stuff. There are many little things that are great about this, but the stuff that is still leaving me wanting more is allowing a little more free form documenation. I often use note taking apps (tried a lot) to collect information and add annotations. If I cannot easily through images in the notes and ideally add annoataions , move the image around and format text around it, I get frustrated. Evernote has started to add this, but Alternote has focused more on text formatting. If only it could all come together I think it would be amazing.

Not Ready for Primetime

While the interface is pretty, the underlying features are not ready for primetime. The Privacy Policy is not up to date, as the product shares data (over Port 443) with Doubleclick.net (known tracker). I have emailed the developer about this scenario, with no response yet. Additionally, the product cannot deal gracefully with the import of a large dataset (in my case ~32,000 notes). Becuase the only preference setting is to sync with the Evernote remote databases, the sync process is contiunally delayed when dealing with large datasets, this is due to the throttling characteristics of the Evernote API (YMMV)... It would be highly beneficial of the product permitted an import of the native Evernote *.enex formatted data (including tags, etc), however, there is no capability for this to take place. Perhaps this is planned for Alternote 2? At any rate, for me, it is not usable, but again, YMMV.

Buyer Beware!!!

While I love the idea of this app, Alternote MODIFIES your Evernote notes without your consent! In Evernote, I use emoji in the titles of certain notes, as a way to highlight them. When I launch Alternote, those notes initially appear just as I entered them (with the emoji). But within a second or two, all of the emoji then DISAPPEAR from every note — and there’s NO WAY TO GET THEM BACK! Surely enough, when I then launch Evernote and it syncs, it thinks the titles were changed intentionally, and so the characters are then removed FOREVER. I’ve since had to manually restore the titles on dozens and dozens of notes — and I cannot even launch Alternote, because each time I do so, it irrevocably CHANGES my notes! How INSANE that an app that purportedly syncs with Evernote would actually MODIFY our notes — without our consent and with NO way to undo or recover the changes that were made! BEWARE!!! Alternote is SERIOUSLY flawed — and for my purposes is UNUSABLE.

Keeps getting better and better!

This is an edit to a previous review I wrote (which can be found below). When I began using this app I wanted to love it, but there were several small bugs that caused me issues. I contacted Alternote and provided feedback; nearly everything that used to bug me has been resolved, and I’m sure the remaining problems will be solved soon. I give this application 5 stars! I love it, and use it everyday! — Original: Amazing concept with close to perfect execution. Love all of the keyboard shortcut support, though I’m still trying to figure out how to turn selected text into a title (with a shortcurt). Just wish there wasn’t so many little bugs! I will continue to support this application as I love how it works and how it looks. Thank you very much! I will edit this review and give a 5 star rating if I notice the bugs getting fixed :)

Simple, yet elegant

This is a nice clean little app, which is basically a much lighter and more streamlined way of entering data into EverNote than the default big fat app. The only thing it seems to lack (currently) is inter-links between notes, but I hope they will add that feature soon. Favorite features: (live MarkDown entry) 1. auto-converts asterisk-prefixed line to bullet-point, then following line is also auto-bulleted 2. auto-converts ##-prefixed line to heading, then following line reverts to body text I would gladly pay a bonus once they add the inter-link freature, the lack of which is the only thing holding me back from awarding it full 5 stars. Alternote is comparable to the following (in no particular order): Growly Notability DEVONnote (the only one of these that has interlinks) MetaNota Smultron 7 Nottingham

So frustrating

Would be an incredible, beautiful app….if only it worked consistenly. There’s also nill customer support. I would really love this and use it all the time, but SO disappointed in this desktop app. Recently was using the app to chart the minutes of an important meeting and for what appeared to be no reason the app just stopped working, shut down, and all of my content was gone into the nether regions of the Interweb graveyard. Ugh.

Really great but I wish it had tabs..

The only thing that would make this app PERFECT is if it had tabs, so I could have multiple notes or notebooks open at the same time. I work across lots of different kinds of media, so I want to be able to see where my ideas overlap.

Almost the perfect note app

All this app needs to be perfect is the ability to add notes & folders from the desktop. While Evernote has been fine in the past, I don’t want them owning my notes any longer. Guys you have a great design, great bug crushing chops and great coding skills, giving you app the ability to use other data sources will guarantee your app will outlive the bloated beast that Evernote has mutated into. Plan for the future and your future will be secure.

Doesn’t Work

When I click this app, It always says that It takes longer than thought and does not start. I reinstalled alternate and also evernote to fix this problem but, never work. Moreover, It only shuts down with force quit...

Great Minimal Evernote app

This app is a great start of what I am looking for: a clutter-free Evernot solution that focuses on content creation without distraction. I also love that it has some default h1 and h2 formatting shortcuts. This is what I wish they would expand on in the future: the ability to create my own styling shortcuts (such as a green 14pt bold style). I also wish there were some more options such as font size and color available in the toolbar. It certainly is beautiful though!
