Alternote the Note-taking App App Reviews

no access to markdown

1) This application made everything conceivable to hide, the underline markdown source (and formats). so you-re unable to change the markdown source, once you injected some markdown in the editing window 2) Copy & Paste doesn’t fill the clipboard. if you do some editing, in the application note, and try to pass the content, into an other markdown application there is noting to pass along, as the clipboard is always empty, when leaving the application. For thoses two reason, claming markdown support, is a little bit exaggerated !! For users, that don’t care about markdown, its nice, but for people that value, content an minimal formatting withing like markdown, this application is not in par with others !

A lot of potential here

Alternote is a good compromise between heavier applications like Evernote and lighter ones like Byword or iA Writer. It feels quite close to the ideal balance between functionality and simplicity, so its potential is quite exciting. However, as others have mentioned, there are some bugs and there is room for improvement. I’ve noticed two things: - When using fullscreen mode, opening the Preferences window opens another fullscreen window. - Markdown handling is too aggressive. The beauty of markdown is adding formatting while KEEPING the special characters visible. I’d love that option. Looking forward to seeing how Alternote progresses!

Best Evernote app

Alternote is the Mac app Evernote should have built themselves. They managed to put most of the complexity of Evernote into a user interface that is so easy-to-grasp and use that it’s just like taking a note while having all your former notes accessible on your finger tip. The only thing I really do miss in the app is a way to put another note to the screen and write a new one. That would be a superpower because I need to compare notes all the time. What I like best is the simple 3-pane view where you easily can switch notebooks on the left, scroll through notes in the middle and quickly make a fix on the right. It’s as easy as the Mac notes app, but more sopicsticated (hierarchical stacks), more beautiful, and powerful without throwing it all in your face like Evernote sadly does. I much prefer the approach of leaving things out so that I have a really usable app as a result. Great value for the money.

TOP

…eine super Evernote-App…!!!

I use it a lot for distraction free writing

Great approach, combining the strength of Evernote with the clutter-free UI known from apps like Ulysses. It would be even better if search supported tags.

Fantastic for Evernote notetakers

Faster and more beautiful for taking notes than going through the full Evernote client. The Markdown support is great! Note a full replacement for Evernote, but that’s the point: the focus on what’s useful for note taking is what makes it so efficient.

Wondeful

Been using the app since its beta and as someone who uses Evernote for a lot of things, this app is a godsend. It tears away most of Evernote’s convolution and keeps the focus on the most essential ingredient: the note itself. Still, it’s a visually striking app- everything from the choice of fonts (Lato is especially delicious) to the delightful animations (which can be turned off, if you choose so).

2 questions

1: how to add pictures? the only way that I found is import picutures and you have concect your phone or cam to catch the pic…. 2: how to change the color for the words? I choose the color for fonts is red, but the fonts’ color is green.

Nice Now - Loads of Potential

I like to write with a large monospaced font (Menlo 18 point) displayed on a dark background. Youd be surprised how many note writing apps severely restrict font sizing options. Alternote was immediately comfortable and beautiful-looking on my Retina MacBook Pro. The distraction free mode, straightforward Evernote integration and file management options are very nicely done. The Ukrainian developers have implemented some WYSIWYG features already with Markdown implementation to follow in a few months. Alternote is nice now with loads of potential.

Hey Evernote: This is how you do it.

At this time, I have only used Alternote for distraction-free mode. This might seem like I’m making very little use of its capabilities, but before you jump to that conclusion read on. I think it’s no secret that Evernote on the Mac is a clunky, feature-filled beast that has become a little too obsessed with the first part of its name: ever. It’s ever-expanding, tries to do everything, and winds up using every resource your machine has available. The poor “note” has been left behind. And here is where Alternote comes in and saves Evernote from itself. Evernote, if you’re listening at all, please oh please pay close attention. For years now your company has added dozens of new features while failing to offer what Alternote has created. Alternote is lightweight, simple to use, and features a distraction-free mode that allows me to use Evernote to capture pure text without getting lost in a sea of notifications. It even goes one step further and offers a wordcount and the option to tag on the fly. What’s more, Alternote allows me to choose which notebooks I want to see, and this is where it truly shines. My workflow has been utterly transformed. You see, I use both Postach.io and a plugin for WordPress that allows me to publish from Evernote. But I hate writing in Evernote. So what I have been doing is writing inside of ByWord and then copying and pasting my stuff into Evernote. Then I go and add pictures into the note. My process is now transformed: I draft directly in Alternote, inside the appropriate notebook, with the appropriate Tag, in glorious Distraction-Free mode. When I’m done, I go into the actual Evernote app and drag the pictures into the appropriate places. With a switch of a tag and a quick command-s to start syncing, my article is now published on the web. Seems like a minor thing, but it’s massive. I can now take out my phone or iPad and go directly to a draft I started working on in the morning. I can take a picture with my phone, pop it right into the draft for my article, and keep on writing. The app has also allowed me to streamline my journaling: though I love DayOne, I’ve always disliked having one place for my journal and another place for my notes. Now I can consolidate them, and I use TextExpander to add time stamps and dates where appropriate. I may not have all the features that DayOne provides, but the Distraction-Free interface and the ability to search for my journal entries within the same interface I use for my other notes is truly priceless. Especially since I often take photos of my hand-written notes. Now I can pop them in my “Journal” notebook and consolidate them together. TL;DR I’ve used this app for maybe a week and it’s already become Dock-worthy. Perfect tool for writers. Keep it up guys.

It’s Pretty Good

This is perfect for school and much better than the actual client. But add the ablitiy to resize images, but please I’m begging you ADD TABLES PLEASE!

Not impressed or blown away...

I have read review after review of Alternote and though, great, a nice simple Evernote client with Markdown support. Well, “yes” and “no” to that. Yes, it has a nice interface and looks great; but it’s Markdown support and implementation is not great, it’s spotty and inconsistent at best. It implements it without allowing you to have (seemingly) the ability to toggle it on/off and that would be nice. The choice of fonts is poor, some aren’t even common for Mac OS X and the default size is huge. It doesn’t display nicely or sync with my IOS devices and so, looks poor on my iPad Mini 2 or iPhone 5s; I don’t have these issues with the Evernote client. The sidebar background changing ability is a nice “gimmick”; as is the night mode and such. I have used it for about an hour over two installations, I tried it for 10 minutes first time and then removed it, having tinkered and found it lacklustre; I then decided to see if there was better documentation at the Alternote website and no, just nice imagery and “review” comments. Sorry, that doesn’t fly as a well crafted tool. So it is being removed and I may try it again; but if I want to really work with Markdown, it’s back to Byword on the Mac and then importing that into Evernote. This is not (for me) a revelation, nor a good client for Evernote; the Evernote client is better and simpler in the end. For the cost, it was a cheap experience and sorry; but comes across as such, cheap. Well, I got what I apparently paid for, I hope you, the reader, have better luck, I will stick with what works for me, the Evernote client for Mac and iOS devices and for Markdown, Byword for Mac, iOS and Editorial for iOS.

Great app that is almost reaching its full potential

Great app that is well worth the download if you like to write in Evernote. This apps interface is clean, intuitive and a pleasure to use. There are a few things that could be added to allow this app to reach its full potential such as the ability to copy a note to another notebook (not move but copy). This would be very helpful as I have templet notes done up for my daily tasks. The developer seems to be updating the app regularly so I have no doubt that my review will be changing to 5 Stars some day soon. To the team building this app I say “Keep up the good work!” Cheers

Keeps getting better.

I’ve been with Alternote since the private beta, and have been consistently impressed. The develophers keep working hard to make a great app even better.

Best note taking app

I love it! Support for basic markdown when typing (no way to export it though). Stored on Evernote. Simple and elegant, easy to manoeuver only with keyboard (it has sane shortcuts). It has a few small bugs, nothing too bad though, but this is why it’s a 4. It could also be better, like exporting the Markdown. The team is very responsive on support and are working on a v2. Keep up!

Was great until not

The good: I love the UI and how simple it is. The less good: There are some glitches with formating (I’ve seen this mainly with check boxes and text copy/pasted from other sources). The very bad: I got multiple sync conflicts with Evernote. I have a single document that was copied multiple time with the title "Conflicting Copy”. This is very annoying because I’m not sure which one is the latest version. At one point a document got lost, data integrity is really important for my note taking app, so for now I will stick with Evernote.

Very clean interface. Some data conflict issues.

As others have mentioned, this app offers a nice uncluttered interface. Sometimes annoying conflicts with Evernote happen where same note gets duplicated. I haven’t lost any data, but I do have to delete duplicate notes on occasion. Otherwise, great app and a pleasure to use.

Great alternative

Alternote has been a great addition to my workflow. I’m an academic, so taking notes, writing lectures, documenting sources is always on my mind, and Alternote’s no-fluff approach keeps me focused on my words instead of the various features of the full Evernote application. That said, I can’t seem to figure out how to add colored labels to my notes. A great app—and looking forward to its development.

Heavy writing Evernote user? This is for you!

Long live to the combinaison of Productivity and Focus! Evernote maybe a really good platform to get all your informations but severely lack in user experience. Alternote to the rescue! This software understand the way brain work when focus is needed and know the importance of clean interface to be able to think! At first I thought it was to minimalistic because I was used to Evernote interface with plenty of stimuli but I must admit that I use it even more than the current Evernote application. Take time to properly try Alternote and you will love how your writing will be more efficient and faster.

Can’t create a new notebook

This seems to have been broken for awhile for me. I can create new notes. But if I click create new notebook, nothing happens. I really want to use this!
